Posters for nursery kids used for gambling, four arrested

SURAT: Bird and animal identification
posters normally used for nursery kids are
being used as gambling tools for betting.
Sleuths of Crime Branch were surprised to
see this mode of gambling when they
arrested four persons from Parvat Patiya
area of the city on Friday. The police
recovered Rs 2,800 in cash from the
accused along with posters of birds and
animals. The accused were released on bail
by a local court.
Sources said Ranjit Raj, Rafiq Mansuri,
Mukesh Mahavir and Kamlesh Khernar
were allegedly gambling on 'chakli-popat' -
sparrow-parrot - when nabbed. They were
inviting passers by to bet money on any of
the covered images and if that image come
out to be true in the lucky draw the
winner got ten times the amount bet.
Ranjit had arranged the material for
gambling and was operating outside Gopal
Nagar Society on Part Patiya Canal Road.
"Due to its simple and instant format it
attracts a large number of gamblers. Since
it is betting of money we booked the
accused for gambling. It is a type of fraud
by the person managing the activity," sub-
inspector M A Sumra of Crime Branch said.
He said the game ends within minutes. A
person is supposed to bet minimum of Rs 10
on the image of his choice and one person
can bet on more than one image. Till the
time the operator doesn't get more than 12
bets he doesn't announce the winner. To
announce the winner the operator chooses
a random cover kept on side which has one
of the images on the poster.
"The operators use the posters normally
used for kids. They are easily available and
it doesn't require much infrastructure to
operate such activity. It also attracts a
huge crowd that gets tempted to play," a
police official said.
